Whipping a human being is a curl act of violence but it was something very normal to do to a slave in the 1860's. Whipping was done to not only men but also woman and children. It was a way to make more money by whipping the slave they would be forced to work or do what they were told to and that is what the slave owners wanted. A slave would be laced with a whip a set number of times according to how many offenses the slaved had made. 39 lashes was the number for most offenses. Moses Roper a slave in the 1860's, received 200 lashes and this was only brought to an end when the master's wife pleaded for his life to be spared. In September, 1844, the St. Louis Republican reported that a eight year old black girl had been whipped to death. However, the master of the girl was acquitted. Black male slaves only wanted to be married with a another female slave from a different plantation because they knew it would be hard to stand and watch their wife get whipped or assaulted. To watch and not be able to do anything about it would kill them inside.
