Question: 2. When Benedick refuses to kill Claudio, Beatrice wishes that she were a man so that she could challenge Claudio to single combat. How is her wish a sign that the men around her are acting dishonorably? Summarize Beatrice’s opinion of men in 4.1.300-307. Is she correct in her assessment of the men around her? In your opinion, would she make a better man at this point?

Answer:Beatrice's wish is a sign that men around her are acting very dishonorably because their are no men in her family that can challenge Claudio for what he has done. Hero is an only child, and the next person after here to stand up as a brother figure is Beatrice. All the men which are around at the moment are all on Claudio's side. Beatrice knows her cousin well enough to know she has done nothing wrong and, that it is all a big lie. In my opinion Beatrice would make a better man at this point because she would take control and do what is deserved to Claudio and put him in his place for all his wrong doings and messing up Hero's life.

Question: 1. In Act 2.1, Don Pedro claims that Beatrice would make “an excellent wife for Benedick,” and Leonato responds that “if they were but a week married, they would talk themselves mad” (265-7).
From what we know of Benedick and Beatrice from Acts 1 and 2, who do you think is right, Don Pedro or Leonato? Support your answer by referring to Benedick and Beatrice’s initial exchange in 1.1.85-106, their teasing of each other in 2.1.91-114, Benedick’s angry speech to Don Pedro in 2.1.179-213, and Benedick’s soliloquy in 2.3. 181-200.

Answer:  From what we know I believe Leonato was right because that is a pretty solid statement to assume about both Benedick and Beatrice not lasting more than a week married. Only for the simple fact that they both cant get along with one another for more then 30 seconds and start arguing about the smallest things. Beatrice and Benedick would never seem to ever be together married in a million years but Don Pedro says other wise and attempts to make it happen. Although when two individuals tease one another in the way Beatrice and Benedick have it normally means they have some sort of feelings for one another and you can tell that from the start but that's not always the case.

Slave Writing
The question I have picked to write about is "Tom Weylin believes Dana is trouble. In what ways is Dana dangerous to the way of life in the Weylin household?"

Tom Weylin believes Dana is trouble to the Weylin household and she is. Dana is a very educated slave. Dana knows how to read and write and that is a real big threat to slave owners. What makes Tom Weylin even more afraid is that Dana is smarter then him and will start teaching other slaves to read and write and that will cause all slaves to rebel against their masters.

The only way a slave can have some sort of freedom is by having a freedom pass from their plantations. With Dana having the education she has she can write freedom passes for all the slaves, which could leave to all the slaves realizing theirs no reason to staying at the Weylin plantation besides for shelter and food.

Whipping a human being is a curl act of violence but it was something very normal to do to a slave in the 1860's. Whipping was done to not only men but also woman and children. It was a way to make more money by whipping the slave they would be forced to work or do what they were told to and that is what the slave owners wanted. A slave would be laced with a whip a set number of times according to how many offenses the slaved had made. 39 lashes was the number for most offenses. Moses Roper a slave in the 1860's, received 200 lashes and this was only brought to an end when the master's wife pleaded for his life to be spared.In September, 1844, the St. Louis Republican reported that a eight year old black girl had been whipped to death. However, the master of the girl was acquitted. Black male slaves only wanted to be married with a another female slave from a different plantation because they knew it would be hard to stand and watch their wife get whipped or assaulted. To watch and not be able to do anything about it would kill them inside.

Blog 4

The blog entry, which makes me extremely proud, is blog #3 “Bitch”. I am very proud of that blog entry because that was the first time I really understood a poem in such detail. I never would have figured there was so much meaning all being a little poem. But have learned there is so much to say and talk about a poem of what’s going on in it and the message behind it.

What I have learned doing all the poem activities we’ve covered in class and out is how many messages there are in a poem. I never knew how to read a poem and understand but these activities have really helped me understand and grasp the message in the poem.

Working with my house members for the first time was a great experience. The first time I ever really understood the true meanings and messages of a poem was with my house members and I thank them for that. Since it was the first time we as house members were ever teamed up we didn’t really exchange any words until each of us were doing with the activity of explaining what’s going on in the poem. After we were all finish we started sharing with one another and has realized how much we were all learning for one another’s answers. It was a great thing and I would defiantly do the activity again.

I have learned all my housemates have a different style for their blogs and have their own view on poems and what they mean.

Blog 3: Bitch

http://atworkandbored.com/
I've decided to write an entry on Carolyn Kizer “Bitch" which was published on 1984.

The Poem:
Now, when he and I meet, after all these years,
I say to the bitch inside me, don’t start growling.
He isn’t a trespasser anymore,
Just an old acquaintance tipping his hat.
My voice says, “Nice to see you,”
As the bitch starts to bark hysterically.
He isn’t an enemy now,
Where are your manners, I say, as I say,
“How are the children? They must be growing up.”
At a kind word from him, a look like the old days,
The bitch changes her tone; she begins to whimper.
She wants to snuggle up to him, to cringe.
Down, girl! Keep your distance
Or I’ll give you a taste of the choke-chain.
“Fine, I’m just fine,” I tell him.
She slobbers and grovels.
After all, I am her mistress. She is basically loyal.
It’s just that she remembers how she came running
Each evening, when she heard his step;
How she lay at his feet and looked up adoringly
Though he was absorbed in his paper;
Or, bored with her devotion, ordered her to the kitchen
Until he was ready to play.
But the small careless kindnesses
When he’d had a good day, or a couple of drinks,
Come back to her now, seem more important
Than the casual cruelties, the ultimate dismissal.
“It’s nice to know you are doing so well,” I say.
He couldn’t have taken you with him;
You were too demonstrative, too clumsy,
Not like the well-groomed pets of his new friends.
“Give my regards to your wife,” I say. You gag
As I drag you off by the scruff,
Saying, “Goodbye! Goodbye! Nice to have seen you again.”

Summary: The poem "Bitch" by Carolyn Kizer is about a female running into a past lover after many years. Upon talking to him she gets a glimpse of the past. The once raging animal inside her has soften up.(line1-5) As she begins to reminisce about the past she realizes its something which cant happen again.(line 6-12) She then begins to tell the bitch inside her to calm down. She remembers how she would be treated by him. She would wait on hand and foot.(line 13-22) While he treated her as an animal using her only when he desired. (line 23-24) She over looked all the bad and thought about the few good things he did do.(line 25-27) She then try's to convince the bitch inside her that it wouldn't have worked just because of the past problems.(line 28-30) She realizes she wouldn't fit well in his world because shes not like him or the people around him.(line 31-34)

The speaker of the poem is a woman who is fighting a emotion in herself called the "bitch" and her outer emotion while being confronted by a past lover. The poem is intended for people who haven't been valued in a previous relationship.

Blog 1: Symbolism of the Rose

The rose is often associated with the lily, both to express a contrast in colors and to symbolize two usually complementary virtues, love and purity (or virginity): both flowers, of course, are emblems of the Virgin Mary. Tennyson has "My rose of love for ever gone, / My lily of truth and trust"

Rose the passage is primarily about how the "Rose" of all flowers is always looked upon the best. It is a sign of beauty and great scent. In all poems and passages over many years the Rose is the king of flowers and stands for as a Virgin Mary. It's a sign of virginity great beauty.
